On the day of the USB general strike, day-labourers occupy abandoned public land in the Foggia area: hoes and tractors for income and against cementation
Migrant seasonal workers from the so-called informal settlement of Torretta Antonacci, in the Foggiano area, took part in the national strike called by the Unione Sindacale di Base and began an occupation of the land, in the tradition of the peasant struggles organised in the 20th century by Giuseppe Di Vittorio, first president of the World Federation of Trade Unions from 1949 to 1957.
The workers demand self-management in order to improve the land and to guarantee work outside and against exploitation and caporalato: a few hectares of uncultivated public land, abandoned and neglected for years, a slap in the face of the misery of those who, a few dozen metres away, are forced to live in dilapidated conditions, in shacks without the most basic services, subjected to the constant blackmail of precariousness and illegal work.
We call on the Apulia Region to allocate these plots of land and to provide access to the irrigation network so that they can start sowing and growing fruit and vegetables immediately.
