WFTU Solidarity Statement with the Strike in Italy

25 Nov 2025by central wftu
The World Federation of Trade Unions, the militant voice of more that 105 million workers who live, work and struggle in 134 countries of the 5 continents, expresses its undivided solidarity with the working class of Italy and the General strike which is going to take place on 28-29 November 2025 under the slogan:  “Say NO to the Meloni government’s budget law – stand with the Palestinian people and stop the genocide!”

The general strike is the conscious and dignified reaction of the popular strata of Italy against the war economy and preparations that reduce resources for health, education, services, and increase the precariousness of work, undermining the interests of the workers, pensioners, students, and unemployed.

The international class-oriented trade union movement struggles for peace and an immediate end to all wars and imperialist intervention.   The WFTU affiliates, the militant unions all over the globe, fight for a society where the wealth of producers will be allocated to those who produce it with their Labor and toil.

We join our voice with the worker on strike and their just demands for wage increase, permanent and stable work, dignified living and working conditions.

Dear Comrades at the Unione Sindacale di Base (USB), Italy

We salute the Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) for including solidarity with Palestine in its call for a national strike on 28 and 29 November. We also deeply appreciate USB’s long-lasting and unwavering solidarity to the Palestinian people facing and resisting Israel’s ongoing genocide and its 77 years of settler-colonialism and apartheid.

USB’s strikes have shed a bright light on the shameful complicity of the Italian government and Italian corporations in enabling Israel’s genocide, illegal occupation and apartheid against Palestinians. They have shown the power of the people and inspired many across the globe.

The strikes that USB, its workers and dockworkers have called for on 22 September, 3 October and the recent announced strike on 28 and 29 November as well as years of disruptive actions preventing or stopping military cargo through Italian ports directed to genocidal Israel have shown that Italian workers can play a key role in escalating and peacefully disrupting complicity in Israel’s crimes. Palestinian trade unions and civil society at large deeply appreciate USB’s response to our call for this meaningful solidarity during the Global Weekend of Action in September. The BDS movement has welcomed the news that a ceasefire agreement was reached on 23 October. Israel, however, continues killing, starving and maiming Palestinians. The genocide continues, albeit in a different form. Even a real ceasefire would only the most important first step to end the livestreamed genocide against the 2.3 million Palestinians in the illegally occupied and besieged Gaza Strip. Without massive pressure, this ceasefire, combined with the genocidal Trump-Netanyahu plan, constitutes a continuation of a less visible form of genocide that Israel and the US hope will provoke less regional and global outrage, boycotts and sanctions. The repercussions of Israel’s planned annihilation of Gaza will not end. An end to the occupation, apartheid, and denial of our refugees’ rights has yet to be won. Solidarity is more needed than ever, and it begins with ending complicity and serious accountability – both moral and legal obligations.

We also see and know that the tide has turned and there must be no going back. People and workers’ power is precisely what has brought us here. The recent wave of targeted sanctions, from Spain to Türkyie, from Malaysia to Colombia, from Slovenia to Antigua and Barbuda, and many more, have been reached because of people pressure on governments all over the world. Israel is more globally isolated than ever before, as even its internationally-wanted Prime Minister has recently admitted. The Trump-Netanyahu plan must be understood as

genocidal Israel’s desperate attempt to relieve this isolation and to save

its 77-year-old regime of settler-colonial oppression.

For these reasons, we, Palestinian trade and professional unions, urgently renew our call to unions around the world, including USB, to escalate all effort to end this shameful complicity in Israel’s illegal occupation, colonial apartheid and genocide.

These are the demands that the Palestinian trade union movement calls on USB and all trade union movements in Italy to put at the center of their actions:

    • Adopt ending complicity as the highest priority of the ongoing actions, strikes and mobilisations to express meaningful solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for liberation, self-determination, and the return and reparations for our refugees.
    • Pressure the Italian government to uphold its legal obligations following the ICJ rulings of 2024, starting with imposing a comprehensive military embargo on Israel, including halting the sale, purchase and transfer/transit of military parts and dual-use items and ensuring end user compliance with international law.
    • Increase pressure on the Italian government and Eni to halt all transfer of oil and petrol to Israel.
    • Launch broad intersectional campaigns to compel institutions — including city councils, universities, trade unions, hospitals, etc. — to adopt ethical procurement and investment policies, where applicable, that exclude companies knowingly and persistently involved in grave human rights violations, particularly war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
    • Join forces with the broader BDS movement to escalate economic, academic, cultural, and sports BDS campaigns to end Israel’s illegal occupation, apartheid and genocide.
