Italian school teachers and staff on strike on April 4
In these weeks Italian Government and trade unions are beginning to discuss the renewal of the school employees' national contract, following the renewal of the ministries' staff contract and the discussion of the health and local government personnel contracts, which were not signed by the unions, at the strong push of USB, due to the scarcity of funds put by the state in salary increases.
Increases of 5.78 percent are allocated for school staff as well, when inflation is at 17 percent, with a further loss of purchasing power for the category, which is already last in Europe in terms of pay. In addition, the government's goal is to incentivize certain figures who are supposed to represent a kind of middle management but with no real role, purpose or training, taking resources away from the funds of individual school institutions with which all the additional duties of teachers are paid (in an already totally inadequate way) every year. The ultimate intent is to create a verticalized and hierarchical, less democratic, increasingly bureaucratized school model in which teachers' work on students' knowledge is relegated to the bottom rung.
USB Scuola firmly opposes a contract renewal emptied of its capacity for economic advancement and improvement of workers' economic conditions, to date possible because of the nature of collaborationist unions, and that is why it will be in demonstration on April 4 together with all Italian school workers.
Moreover, the Preparedness Union Strategy released on the 26th March paths the way to a stronger militarization and a fear state, trying to oblige teachers to add “preparedness lessons” to their daily work. USB firmly disapproves this policies and invites teachers to disobey and enact conscientious objection claiming the right to refuse serve in support of the military and belligerent policies that are rampant in the EU and all United Nations countries.
On 4 April, USB school workers will loudly say a firm no to belligerent policies and warfare state in favour of a real recovery of policies to improve the welfare state.
