Il saluto di LAB (Paesi Baschi)

Dear comrades

The LAB trade union of the Basque Country sends its greetings to the congress, and wishes you every success, both at the congress and in the future. The decisions taken at this congress, held in a very difficult context, will be of vital importance for the Italian working class, and we are sure that the militancy of the Unione Sindacale di Base will be at the height of the circumstances as it has been so far.

We are living in a particularly complicated international context. The several crises that have hit the world over the last few decades are greatly altering the global picture of the world. Thus, during the 21st century, we are witnessing the military interventionism of the US and its allies, the financial crisis of 2008, the care crisis already underway, but which is worsening with the COVID-19 pandemic, the increase in inequalities within, outside and between the borders of the same country and, more recently, the conflict in Ukraine.

Covid-19 triggered at least three crises in a short period of time. What began as a health problem quickly turned into an economic crisis, whose outcome of which is still too early to assess as a whole, but which some already anticipate may turn out to be the most serious since the beginning of the last century. Then came the third crisis: the care crisis.

Those who years ago said that there was no alternative to capitalism are now talking about "re-founding capitalism". But the truth is that capitalism has long since failed because it is an unjust political and economic system. It is an unjust system because it has succeeded in linking white supremacism and hetero-patriarchy as constituent values of class exploitation, giving rise to the greatest social inequalities in human history. In short, we live in the era of globalisation, but of the globalisation of injustice.

The right to education, health, decent housing, adequate food and development, although provided for in different international legal frameworks, is in practice denied to millions of people, precisely at a historic moment when fair access to land, territory and common goods, if given equitably, could eradicate poverty.

At LAB we are aware that we are in a time of change, because change is inevitable. It is clear that we cannot continue like this. This system is a giant with feet of clay. The main dispute in our view is where this change is heading. We are witnessing the offensive of capital, and a deep dispute over the narrative. We want to direct the sense of the necessary changes. And we sum it up in something that is said quickly but that implies changing many things: Triple distribution: of employment, of wealth and of care.

The war in Ukraine, the lack of a European policy of its own and the resulting submission to the interests of the United States and its armed wing NATO, are plunging Europe into a deep generalised crisis in which people's living conditions are becoming increasingly precarious.

There is an increasingly widespread feeling that living conditions in the world are becoming more precarious. It is a historical moment in which the consequences of the political and economic model are extremely serious. In the midst of the struggle for hegemony, it is always the working class and the popular classes who lose in the midst of a new war.

It is necessary to denounce the war and the military manoeuvres, together with the strategy of the USA and NATO to push us towards this scenario. It is urgent to stop the military attacks and to demand the lifting of sanctions against Russia. Courageous, committed and realistic diplomacy is essential to reach the necessary agreements and achieve a solution to the conflict through dialogue.

It is significant how, since the beginning of the war, the giants of the arms industry have made billions in profits on the stock market, demonstrating the role of these lobbies in this war strategy. At a time when the discourse is that there is no money for health, education and social policies, basic conditions for sustaining life, resolutions are agreed to produce more weapons.

Today, more than ever, international relations are needed that escape from the logic of the dominant blocs. International relations that are based on the rights of nature, of all nations and of all people, and that put life at the centre. In this sense, we, the nations, can promote an alternative to this world order that is based on sovereignty and solidarity.

We are extremely concerned about the rise of the far-right and what is called post- fascism in Europe. The oppression and precariousness of working class people is becoming more and more evident, with capital incomes increasing exponentially to the detriment of labour incomes and more and more people on the margins of capitalist standards of consumption.

Violence, misogyny and persecution against women are also increasing. Faced with the increasing correlation of forces won by feminism, several conservative and far-right leaders have come out against what they consider "gender ideology", once again attacking the different emancipation movements led by women. Attacks on stateless nations should also be mentioned, as states are not losing power, they are using their power coercively in the maintenance of so-called security and law and order.

At this juncture, we have an ethical and political duty to act, and to do so urgently, before it will be too late. For all these reasons, LAB believes that it is necessary to build agreements to reject war and the European arms race, to defend popular sovereignty and the right to self-determination of peoples, to fight against the different forms of violence and inequalities between men and women, and also between local and migrant workers, and to build a retaining wall between peoples that, based on feminism and internationalist solidarity, is capable of confronting the rise of the far-right.

On this way, we will continue to strengthen the historic ties that bind us to LAB and USB. An alliance and a friendship, forged over the years within the class oriented and anti- imperialist trade unionism project of the World Federation of Trade Unions. The WFTU is the only international trade union federation that can lead the working class, so that changes are made in defence of the rights of all nations and peoples, and not for the benefit of capital.

For all these reasons, one of the main challenges we have today in LAB is how to strengthen the WFTU project in Europe in the face of an ETUC, which has once again been unmasked in the current context of generalised crisis. From the WFTU we have to be able to lead the changes in Europe, given the ineffectiveness of yellow trade unionism and its inability to defend the rights of the working class.

You know that you can count on LAB for everything you need, and that we will be at your side whenever you need it. The Basque internationalist Pakito Arriaran, when he was fighting with the FMLN guerrilla in El Salvador, said just before he was murdered, that he had two countries to love and a whole world to fight for. LAB, following his example, claims that we have many countries and people to love and a whole world to fight for, and of course you are all part of our best wishes.

Aurrera bolie!

VIVA USB!

Message of PEO Cyprus to the 3rd Congress of USB Italy.

The General Council of Pancyprian Federation of Labor PEO Cyprus conveys to all the delegates and workers of Italy the class solidarity and the militant greetings of the workers of Cyprus on the occasion of the organization of the 3rd USB Congress.

Your Congress is taking place at a critical time when the working class is facing many difficulties and challenges.

But the struggles of Italy’s working class led by USB send messages of hope.

USB despite the attacks, even murders of its members, did not stop resisting and defending the rights of workers, young people and women, immigrants.

The ongoing war deepens the capitalist crisis even further, unemployment and inflation are leading to a further deterioration of the lives of   millions of workers suffering from low wages and poverty.  At the same time, attacks against the working class and the trade union movement, against trade union freedoms and collective action are intensifying.

The difficulties faced by workers are the result of the policies promoted by the European Union, which serve the interests of capital and the increase in the profits, further exacerbate social conflicts and exploitation.

In Cyprus, as in the rest of the world, workers are experiencing the consequences of anti-people’s policies and attacks by capital that have led to the reduction of labour and social rights.  PEO continues its struggles to defend workers’ rights, against the deregulation of labor and for the protection of collective labor agreements, for measures to support the workers form the high prices and for the complete reintroduction of Automatic Salary Indexation.

In today’s conditions solidarity and class struggles are the answer to the European Union’s policies that lead peoples to misery and impoverishment.

On behalf of PEO, we reiterate the firm solidarity and support of the Cypriot workers in your struggles and we assure you that through the lines of the class-oriented global trade union movement of the WFTU, on the basis of solidarity and internationalism, we will continue our common struggles against the imperialist wars in order  peace and social justice to prevail for all peoples.

PEO - Pancyprian Federation of Labour
