TROIKA OUT OF CYPRUS

Today, Cyprus, due to the most recent authoritarian anti-peoples decisions of the Eurogroup and the Troika that have been approved in an atmosphere of blackmail and threats, is at the centre of discussion both on a European, but also international level.

It is obvious that the EU ruling circles through the Stability Mechanism and the Troika do not promote assistance and solidarity, but instead the destruction of Cyprus´ productive forces. As in other countries, but more so in the case of Cyprus, the Troika is behaving with cynicism and is imposing on Cyprus the regime of a dependent colony.

As a result of these decisions, it is in fact destroying the economy's basic pillars which are leading to the shrinking of the Cyprus economy and to rising unemployment. Furthermore, their decisions include sweeping privatisations of profitable Semi-state organisations whereby public wealth will in reality be sold off to private monopolies.

Today the Providence Funds, a great gain of the working people safeguarded within collective agreements, due to these decisions, are under great danger.

As a result of the Eurogroup agreement and the Memorandum, as the other bail-out Memorandums of the Troika and the IMF that have been imposed on other countries, the attacks on the Cypriot people's political, social and labour rights are intensifying.

Cyprus due to the consequences of the global crisis, but also the impact of the reckless exposure of the big Cypriot banks to the Greek economy, was forced to apply to the EU´s Stability Mechanism. This decision was not easy because the Troika's philosophy and policies already implemented in other countries, and in Greece in particular, are well known where in the space of six months they led the Greek people to destitution.

The Christofias government defined "red lines" and waged tough negotiations, concluding a tolerable agreement where the working people's basic rights would not have been affected and there wasn't any provision for privatisations. This agreement due to the Troika's delaying tactics was not signed and the reason for this is quite obvious today. Unfortunately, the results of the 24th February Presidential elections led to a negative political development for the working people of Cyprus as the candidate of the neo-liberal Right Nicos Anastasiades was elected President. The EU neo-liberal ruling circles pinned their hopes on Anastasiades and helped him get elected so that they could push through the policies Christofias had rejected.

Despite the fact that Anastasiades declared that he would improve the Memorandum and wouldn't promote any privatisations, the agreement that was concluded with the Eurogroup accepted all the Troikas demands, namely the haircut on deposits and privatisations, as well as other measures.

The developments cause concerns for other reasons as well, since the policies and measures that are being imposed in Cyprus are also related to the developments and wider geostrategic plans for the Mediterranean region and beyond too.

The big powers are turning their attention not only towards the geostrategic position of Cyprus but to its natural resources.

Cyprus has enormous natural gas reserves and their exploitation will commence soon. It is evident that through their statements, but also with the measures being imposed by the Troika, Cyprus is being led to economic disaster so that they can control this wealth belonging to the Cypriot people and put it under their own supervision. In essence the national wealth, but also the sovereignty of the Cyprus state is being given away through these policies.

It is apparent that as a result of this new situation they want to impose a solution of the Cyprus problem that will serve their own interests and not those of the people of Cyprus.

PEO, the class-based trade union movement of Cyprus, despite the difficulties and fully aware of the negative balance of forces has demonstrated from the very outset its determination to resist the destructive policies the Troika is imposing. In view of these measures and policies, PEO in cooperation with the rest of the People's Movement of the Left, is continuously organising demonstrations and mobilisations of the working people for the defence of their rights and the rejection of these policies. On 19th March in an unprecedented mobilisation of the people and workers, and despite the negative blackmailing atmosphere that the mass media and the Government sought to promote, the Parliament rejected the Troika's proposal.

PEO supports the disengagement from the Stability Mechanism given that within the framework of the Mechanism and the Troika and the destructive policies of austerity and privatisations being promoted, there can be no solution.
